Psychosocial | What Is It? And What Does It Mean?

It is very easy for businesses and companies to throw fancy words around with an infographic and call it a day. But rarely do those businesses actually define and talk about what some of their industry-specific terminologies mean. In the world of mental health and disability support providers, one of the newer terms is ‘Psychosocial’.

What Not To Do!

One big example of what not to do is when all big corporate businesses throw the word ‘Synergy’ into all their HR meetings. If anyone has worked in finance, stock brokerage or even some federal science branches you’ll have heard of Synergy. But nobody knows what it is! The textbook definition is “the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.” So realistically they could just ask employees to better their cooperation and attain the same business vision, but they don’t.

Here at Recovery Plus Support the word you’ll hear a lot as either an employee or a participant is Psychosocial. Psychosocial Disability, Psychosocial Recovery Coach, Psychosocial by Slipknot (maybe not so much that last one). But what does Psychosocial mean?

So Psychosocial or Psychosocial Health is in reference to mental, spiritual, emotional and social implications of what defines being healthy. In other words Psychosocial refers to your ability to; interact with others, think, learn and just ‘be’. And these are all very important to a balanced and quality life. The ability to interact within your community with those close to you is a skill many take for granted without realising how many people actually struggle with this.

Alright, so now we know what the word Psychosocial means as well as what it entails within the brain. But…

How Does a Psychosocial Recovery Coach Work?

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching (PRC) is one of the newer forms of support that the NDIS can offer. A PRC has specialised experience and education as a mental health support person. PRC’s either need to have Lived Experience in mental health and illnesses or very extensive knowledge on the subject.

A PRC will use this large library of knowledge to help their participant to build and utilise a Recovery Plan to assist them in achieving their own independence. During your time working alongside your PRC not only will they ensure you get the absolute most out of your NDIS Plan but they will connect you to mainstream supports and help coordinate them.
